About Curren Environmental

Curren Environmental, Inc. is an environmental consulting and contracting firm based in New Jersey. It works across New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware. The firm says it has served clients since the late 1990s, and it describes itself as a boutique firm that both consults and does the field work.

That combination is the main reason to look at Curren. The firm owns its own geophysical, drilling and excavation equipment. It is licensed by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and Delaware’s Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control to perform tank closures and subsurface evaluations. Its senior project managers hold New Jersey’s Licensed Site Remediation Professional (LSRP) designation. Every field employee has completed 40-hour OSHA health and safety training, with the annual 8-hour refresher.

Curren assigns a dedicated project manager to each job as the client’s single point of contact. It also says plainly that it does not do everything, and will refer clients to another firm when the work falls outside what it performs.

Services Offered

Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment

Curren performs Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessments to ASTM E1527-21 and the EPA’s All Appropriate Inquiries rule. Its project managers serve as the Environmental Professional. The work covers a site visit, historical research (aerial photos, street directories, building permits, Sanborn fire insurance maps, topographic maps), geology and groundwater setting, regulatory records from fire departments and state and federal agencies, and interviews with owners, tenants and regulators.

Curren warns buyers about one timing trap in particular. Under E1527-21, regulatory file reviews carry more weight, and when a state agency has to pull old files from an archive the Phase 1 can take four to six weeks. Curren puts a simple site with no prior contamination at about three weeks. If your closing is two weeks out, order the Phase 1 now.

Phase 2 Site Investigation

When a Phase 1 finds a Recognized Environmental Condition, the next step is a Phase 2: sampling soil, groundwater or soil vapor to see whether contamination is actually there. Curren runs these with its own GPR, Geoprobe direct-push drilling and excavation equipment and crews. It says that puts its prices 20% or more below firms that subcontract the drilling. For how the two reports fit together, see our Phase 1 vs Phase 2 guide.

Remediation and Other Services

  • Phase III remediation, including in-situ soil and groundwater work
  • Underground and aboveground storage tank testing, cleaning, removal and closure in place
  • New Jersey ISRA and LSRP services, and the Pennsylvania Act 2 land recycling program
  • Vapor intrusion investigation, sub-slab and indoor air sampling, and mitigation
  • Ground penetrating radar surveys to find buried tanks and utilities
  • Asbestos, mold and lead paint inspections

Pricing

Curren publishes price ranges for both phases on its own cost pages:

ServicePublished priceSource
Phase I ESA$2,100 to $4,000 averagePhase I cost page
Phase II investigation$7,000 to $37,000 on recent Curren projectsPhase II cost page

At the low end of the Phase I range is a smaller, simpler site. At the high end is an industrial site with a history of issues to evaluate. Curren also ties price to the experience of the person doing the work: a senior Environmental Professional bills more than a junior one. For Phase II, the same page says a small job can cost as little as $1,000 and a complex one well over $15,000, because the price depends on what is being tested and where.

For typical market prices, see our New Jersey Phase 1 ESA cost page and New Jersey Phase 2 cost page.

Service Area

Every page of Curren’s site says it serves Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and its state licenses for tank closures and subsurface work cover the same three states. Its New Jersey specialties, ISRA and the LSRP program, matter most for industrial and commercial properties in that state.

What to Provide for a Quote

  • Property address, current use and approximate acreage or building size
  • Known past uses, especially fuel storage, auto repair, dry cleaning or manufacturing
  • Any prior Phase 1, Phase 2, tank closure or NJDEP case documents
  • Your lender’s report requirements and any reliance parties
  • Your closing date, allowing for the agency file reviews Curren warns about

Best For

  • New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware transactions where a Phase 1 may lead straight into sampling, and you want one firm with its own drilling equipment to carry it through
  • Former gas station and tank sites, given Curren’s tank removal, closure and tank-grant experience
  • New Jersey industrial properties that trigger ISRA and need an LSRP
  • Buyers who want published prices, since Curren posts ranges for both Phase I and Phase II
