About Origin Design
Origin Design is a full-service design firm headquartered in Dubuque, Iowa. It has operated since 1982 and was formerly known as IIW. The firm offers architecture; engineering, including land development, municipal, structural, transportation and water resources; field services; and land survey. It describes itself as employee-owned, and its newsroom announces promotions of employee owners.
Origin has three offices: Dubuque, a Quad Cities office in Davenport, Iowa, and a Southwest Wisconsin office in Shullsburg. Its project list includes work for the cities of Dubuque, Davenport and DeWitt and for Alliant Energy, as well as commercial, industrial, healthcare and real estate development clients.
Its survey team works on both public and private projects. Recent examples on its website include architectural and land surveying work for the A.Y. McDonald Mfg. Co. foundry and survey work for the Tri-County Trail Commission on the Cheese Country Recreation Trail.
It appears in this directory because its Land Survey team performs the ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey that commercial lenders and title insurers ask for before closing.
Services Offered
ALTA/NSPS Land Title Survey
Origin’s land survey page lists ALTA/NSPS land title surveys among its team’s areas of expertise, alongside boundary and topographic surveys, acquisition and right-of-way plats, construction surveys, subdivisions and specialized surveys. The team works for public and private clients on projects from roads and bridges to site development, subdivisions and buildings, and uses 3D scanning for existing structures.
Delivery model: in-house. The ALTA work is done by Origin’s own Land Survey team, and the firm announced that its Davenport office now has dedicated on-site survey staff for the Quad Cities. There is no sign of the coordinator model, where a firm subcontracts the fieldwork to other surveyors. Origin says it is certified for land surveying in Iowa and Wisconsin, with Illinois certification in progress, so for a property on the Illinois side of the Mississippi, confirm before you order.
Before you request a quote, decide which Table A items your lender and title company need. The Table A list is the biggest variable in ALTA scope and price.
Other Services
- Land development engineering: site layout, grading and stormwater for new development
- Municipal, transportation and water resources engineering
- Structural engineering and architecture
- Field services during construction
Origin’s website lists no Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment service. If your lender needs one, see Phase 1 ESA providers in Iowa and our Iowa Phase 1 ESA cost page.
Service Area
Origin is certified for land surveying in Iowa and Wisconsin, and those are the states recorded on this listing. Its survey staff work from Dubuque and Davenport, and the firm also has an office in Shullsburg, in Southwest Wisconsin. Its projects cluster in eastern Iowa, the Quad Cities and southwest Wisconsin, so for a property elsewhere in either state, ask how the field work would be staffed.
What to Expect
Origin quotes per job. Its website publishes no price range for any service. Acreage, Table A items, property type and lender requirements will set the number. For typical market prices, see our Iowa ALTA survey cost page and the Wisconsin ALTA survey cost page.
What to Provide for a Quote
- Property address, parcel number, type and approximate acreage
- The title commitment, and your lender’s required Table A items
- Which state the property is in, given Origin’s Iowa and Wisconsin certification
- Your closing date and the date you actually need the survey
- Any prior surveys or plats of the property
Best For
- Dubuque and Quad Cities transactions where a local survey crew can reach the site quickly
- Southwest Wisconsin properties near Origin’s Shullsburg office
- Buyers who will develop the site, since the same firm does land development engineering and architecture after closing
- Sites with existing structures, where 3D scanning helps document improvements

Prices are what each firm publishes on its own website. "Quote only" means the firm offers the service and publishes no rate, which is the norm. "Our read" is our own three-way band across the customer review sources we hold for each firm, not any platform's score restated. Each provider page names the sources behind it.
